There's so much to consider when planning an international trip. To ensure your journey is as seamless as possible we've put together a checklist to help you.

International departures

To help you navigate your way to Newcastle Airport, view our Maps or visit Parking & transport for more information.

For international flights we recommend arriving at the Airport at least 2-hours before your flight’s scheduled departure to allow time for parking, checking in your luggage and passing through both our domestic and international security screening points.

Check you have all your relevant travel documents before you leave home, including e-tickets, visas and a current/valid passport.

All passengers, including children and infants travelling with an adult, will need to provide valid Passport identification.

  • The check-in area is located in Departures (left side of the terminal). Make sure you have your ticket information and passport handy, then proceed to your airline counter.
  • Luggage requirements vary with each airline. We recommend checking luggage requirements with your airline before you leave home.
  • Luggage trolleys are available for hire at the entrance to Departures and in most car airport car parks.

All international passengers are required to go through two security screening points, domestic security screening and then through international security screening.

Domestic Screening

  • Once you've checked-in you'll proceed to the domestic security screening point. Your carry-on luggage will be x-ray screened and you’ll pass through a body scanner.
  • You will need to empty your pockets and place any loose items such as coins, mobile phones and keys in your carry-on bag before arriving at the front of the screening line.
  • Then remove any bulky clothing such as jackets or jumpers, and when directed place your jacket or jumper and carry-on bag in the tray provided.
  • Newcastle Airport uses next generation security screening equipment that does not require you to remove laptops, mobile devices, belts, metal accessories and aerosols from your bag. Please ensure any aerosols have lockable lids.
  • You can leave your powders, liquids and gels in your carry-on bag at this time.
  • You may be asked to remove your shoes.

International Screening

  • At the international screening point you will be processed by an Australian Border Force security officer and then be required to proceed to the security screening point. You may also be randomly selected for a frisk search.
  • You will need to show your passport, boarding pass and PLAGs - powders, liquids, aerosols and gels. All other items can remain in your carry-on bag.

Powders, Liquids, Aerosols & Gels

  • For all international flights any liquids, aerosols and gels over 100ml must be packed in your checked luggage.
  • You can take liquids, aerosols and gels in your carry-on luggage only if they are in containers that are 100ml or less and are in a clear zip lock bag ready to be scanned at the international security check point.
  • All powders must be presented separately.
  • Inorganic powders must not exceed 350ml/350g and include items such as salt, sand, talcum powder, detergent powder and deodorant powder. Remember containers must not exceed 350ml.
  • Organic powders have no restrictions. Examples include powdered baby formula, powdered food, coffee, protein powder, flour, spices and sugar.

  • Any food purchased from retail outlets in the Departures lounge may be taken through the International screening point. (Note: drinks cannot be taken through.)
  • Once you're checked-in and relaxed, make the most of our free Wifi and browse our online duty free shop, the Loop Duty Free. Place your order before your flight departs Newcastle and collect your goods at Auckland Airport.
  • All international passengers travelling to Auckland receive a 15% discount (excluding technology and tobacco products).
  • The Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) allows you to claim a refund of the goods and services tax (GST) and wine equalisation tax (WET) that is paid on certain goods purchased in Australia.
  • The TRS office is operated by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and is located in the International Departures Lounge.
  • Please make sure you have enough time to make your TRS claim; you should complete your departure immigration clearance at least 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time of your flight.
  • Visit Australian Border Force (ABF) to learn more about the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), or call their toll free number 133177.

International Arrivals

In preparation for your arrival into Australia please ensure you have your passport, completed incoming passenger card and airline ticket available for inspection. If you are unsure what to declare, tick ‘yes’ to the question, or ask a Border Agency officer who can assist you determine what goods should be declared.

Visit Australian Border Force (ABF) to learn more about what should be declared, or call their toll free number 133177.

Our International Arrivals are processed in three steps

  1. Customs and Immigration – please have your passport, incoming passenger card and airline ticket ready for inspection. For security reasons you must keep your phone switched off until you have cleared Customs.
  2. Baggage Collection – all luggage can be collected from baggage carousel B.
  3. Border Security - once you have your luggage you will pass through the Border Protection screening point.

All International flights arriving at Newcastle Airport are processed through Gate 7. Family and friends waiting to greet arriving passengers can meet them in the domestic arrivals lounge, opposite Cibo Café.

There is a dedicated car pick-up zone directly opposite the arrivals exit doors. Vehicles picking-up passengers must be attended by the driver at all-times and can only be in this area for a maximum of two-minutes. It is a federal offence to leave vehicles unattended and you risk a fine.
