Newcastle Airport is one of the first Airports in Australia to become fully compliant with the Australian Government’s new mandatory aviation security screening requirements.

Rapiscan Systems were contracted to supply and install the new security screening equipment for the airport. Rapiscan is a global leader in security equipment and systems, with products installed in major airports around the world.

We commenced the upgrade works in August 2019 and had a 31 December 2020 deadline for full completion. The project was delivered ahead of time and commenced operation on 4 November 2019.

Scope of work

Our existing security screening equipment was replaced with the most advanced CT technology.  This included new equipment for checked baggage, cabin baggage and goods screening. We also installed new body scanners for improved passenger screening.

The new state of the art security screening equipment means passengers are no longer required to undergo random explosives detection testing or to remove electronic devices, aerosols and liquids from their hand luggage.

The scope of work included:

  • Supply and installation of two Checked Baggage Screening X-rays, including BHS modification
  • Supply and installation of two Cabin Baggage and Goods Screening X-rays, with associated lane modules and return tray system
  • Supply and installation of two Body Scanners
